Add the Shinkansen and JR trips you plan, pick a pass, and see whether the Japan Rail Pass saves you money.

The JR Pass is worth it only if your JR travel in the pass period costs more than the pass: ¥50,000 for 7 days online. A Tokyo–Kyoto round trip is about ¥27,700 (est.), so a Tokyo–Kyoto-only trip doesn't break even; adding Hiroshima or Kanazawa usually does. Nozomi trains need a supplement.

Your JR trips during the pass (number of one-way rides; fares est.)

Green Car fares are higher than these ordinary-seat estimates; for a Green pass, compare against Green Car fares.

Frequently asked questions

Is the JR Pass worth it in 2026?

Only for long-distance itineraries. A 7-day pass costs ¥50,000 online, and a Tokyo–Kyoto round trip costs about ¥27,700 (our estimate), so you need roughly that much again in JR travel within the same week, such as Kyoto to Hiroshima and back, or Tokyo to Kanazawa, to break even.

Does the JR Pass cover the Nozomi?

Not on its own. Nozomi and Mizuho trains need a special supplement ticket for each ride, bought with the pass. Hikari and Sakura trains on the same lines are covered and take a little longer.

Is it cheaper to buy the JR Pass online?

Yes. Online purchase on the official site costs ¥50,000 for 7 days, against ¥53,000 through an overseas agency.

What's a good itinerary for the JR Pass?

Tokyo → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Osaka → Tokyo in 7 days usually breaks even, especially if you add the Narita Express and local JR rides. Tokyo and Kyoto only does not.

How accurate are the fares?

The pass prices are official. The one-way fares are our estimates of regular reserved-seat fares, rounded; use JR's own fare search for exact figures on your dates.

Sources and how current this is

Fares, rates and norms come from the official sources below unless marked as an estimate, and were checked in November 2026. Operators change prices, so check the source before you rely on a number.

Best estimates (not official)

Where no official figure was available, we use our best estimate from published reports, operator sites, reviews and traveler reports. These are marked "est." in the tools above; treat them as a guide, not a quote.
