Frequently asked questions

What's the best area to stay in Tokyo for first-timers?

Shinjuku for most people: it has the biggest station, hotels at every price, and food and nightlife on the doorstep. Shibuya suits a younger, shopping-and-nightlife trip, and Ginza or the Tokyo Station area suits travelers taking the Shinkansen.

Where should I stay in Tokyo on a budget?

Asakusa, Ueno and Akihabara have the most good-value hotels and hostels, and all sit on fast subway or JR lines into the center.

Is it better to stay in Shinjuku or Shibuya?

Shinjuku is more central for trains and has more hotels; Shibuya is smaller, trendier and better for shopping. They're about seven minutes apart on the JR Yamanote Line, so either works.

Where should families stay in Tokyo?

Ginza and the Tokyo Station area for space, calm and easy trains, or Asakusa for a traditional neighborhood with lower prices. Avoid hotels right in Kabukicho or Roppongi's nightlife streets.
