Find out whether the Tokyo Subway Ticket beats paying by Suica, whether a JR Pass pays off for your route, and what a taxi will cost.
For most visitors a Suica or PASMO card is enough: Tokyo subway rides cost ¥180 to ¥430. The Tokyo Subway Ticket (¥1,000 for 24 hours, ¥2,000 for 72 hours) pays off from about three to five subway rides a day. The JR Pass (¥50,000 for 7 days) only pays off with long Shinkansen trips.

Good to know
- The 24-hour clock starts on first use for the paper Tokyo Subway Ticket; loaded onto a PASMO it starts from purchase.
- The Tokyo Metro & Toei 1-Day Ticket costs ¥1,100 since March 14, 2026, so the Tokyo Subway Ticket's 24-hour version (¥1,000) is the cheaper of the two if you can buy it.
- Children pay about half. The child Tokyo Subway Ticket is ¥500, ¥750 or ¥1,000.
- Nozomi and Mizuho trains need a special supplement ticket on top of the JR Pass.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Tokyo Subway Ticket worth it?
It depends on how many subway rides you take. The 24-hour ticket costs ¥1,000, the 48-hour ¥1,500 and the 72-hour ¥2,000 since March 14, 2026. Single Tokyo Metro fares run ¥180 to ¥330, so the 24-hour ticket pays off at about four to six rides a day. The 72-hour ticket works out at about ¥667 a day, so it pays off at three or four rides a day. It covers Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway only, not JR lines such as the Yamanote Line.
Suica or PASMO: which should I get?
Either. Both are tap-to-pay IC cards that work on trains, subways and buses around Tokyo and in many shops. A regular Suica is sold from ¥1,000, which includes a ¥500 deposit. Visitors can get a Welcome Suica or a tourist PASMO instead: there is no deposit, but they can only be used for 28 days.
Is the JR Pass worth it for a Tokyo trip?
Not for Tokyo alone. A 7-day JR Pass costs ¥50,000 bought online, and it only pays off if your JR fares for the week add up to more than that, which usually means long Shinkansen trips such as Tokyo to Kyoto and back. Note that the pass does not cover Nozomi or Mizuho trains unless you buy a special supplement ticket. Use the calculator above with the fares for your own trips.
How much is a taxi in Tokyo?
In Tokyo's 23 wards and Musashino and Mitaka, the upper-limit fare since April 20, 2026 is ¥500 for the first 1.0 km, then ¥100 for every 232 m. In slow traffic (10 km/h or less) the meter adds ¥100 for every 1 minute 25 seconds instead. Each company sets its fare within the government-approved band, so some cabs charge slightly less.
Do I need cash for trains in Tokyo?
No. An IC card such as Suica or PASMO, or a Welcome Suica, pays your fare when you tap it at the gate, and the same card works on buses and in many shops. You can also load the Tokyo Subway Ticket onto a PASMO instead of carrying a paper ticket.

Left out because we could not confirm it from an official source: Tokyo's late-night taxi surcharge percentage and airport flat fares (not on the official sheets we could reach); the full Tokyo Metro and Toei fare tables (the operators' sites block automated access, so we use GO TOKYO's ranges); who is eligible to buy the Tokyo Subway Ticket (check at the point of sale).
